Hannon Proves Wally Pipp Alive and Well at District 6 Championships

| February 23, 2013 | 0 Comments

The ghost of Wally Pipp made an appearance for Mifflin County at the District 6 Class AAA championships on Saturday.

For those who don’t know the story, Pipp was the starting first baseman for the New York Yankees until he got hurt and an unknown Lou Gehrig took over. The rest is history.

I don’t know if Drew Hannon will have the impact of a Gehrig, but he definitely can relate to the situation.

Hannon came into the tournament with an 0-3 record. He was wrestling for injured starter Tre Carter, who was out due to an injured ankle suffered at the PIAA state duals.

The Husky junior wasn’t given much of a chance by most anyone. He was a two-and-out on paper.

Hannon proved matches are won on the mat not on paper.

He opened the tournament with the upset of the opening round, knocking off third-seeded Loc Long of Central Mountain with a fall in 1:29. In the semifinals, Hannon was pinned by the rugged Mante Barnes of Altoona and fell to the consolations.

In the consys, Hannon secured a spot in the Northwest Regionals next week with a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Joaquin Alvarez of State College.

“He capitalized on his opportunity and to his credit, he’s moving on to regionals. Nothing could be better than that,” said Mifflin County coach Kirby Martin.

From zero wins on the season to regional qualifier. A Wally Pipp story if there ever was one.

“I just figured to go in and have fun, relax and not to be to stressed about anything,” said Hannon, who finished fourth in the district. “I’m pretty excited about going to regionals. I’m going to try and wrestle the same way there…not to get too stressed and just have fun.”

It’s a formula that paid big dividends for Mifflin County and an underdog wrestler nobody gave a chance to win.

Mifflin County Sends Six to Finals: Ten Advance to Regionals

| February 23, 2013 | 0 Comments

Mifflin County kept hold of its lead in the team race by advancing six wrestlers into the finals and ten into regionals at the District 6 Class AAA wrestling championships this morning.

Hayden Hidlay (113), Issac Underhill (120), Noah Stewart (126), Lucas Besch (132), Brandon Wilson (145) and Joe Knarr (152) guaranteed themselves a berth in the Northwest Regionals next week with semifinal wins.

“It’s a great number (getting ten through). To be honest, it’s not what I predicted but we’ll take it,” said Mifflin County coach Kirby Martin. “This is very exciting. I can’t be happier for the kids. They’ve been focused all week and this weekend…they deserve it. The kids have done a great job.”

Hidlay (23-4) had a 6-1 lead over Keanan Bottorf of Central Mountain before clamping him in 4:52. Hidlay will meet Bald Eagle Area’s Travis Giedroc for the title tonight at 7 pm.

The rest of the Fab Freshmen followed suit.

Stewart (27-5) came up big with a 3-2 win over Central Mountain’s Cole Hanley. Stewart scored a takedown in the first and an escape in the second before giving up a late takedown for the 3-2 advantage. In the third, Hanley chose down and Stewart rode him out for the victory. He will meet Philipsburg’s Brian Evans in the finals.

Wilson improved to 19-5 on the season with a solid 7-3 victory over Scott Yarger of P-O. Wilson was in control the whole match, scoring three takedowns and only giving up escapes. Wilson will take on State College’s Derek Horner in the finals.

Underhill advanced to the title bout with a 2:39 fall over Daniel Sills of State College. The Husky sophomore held a 6-0 advantage before scoring the deck job. Underhill (30-7) hooks up with Bellefonte’s Trevor Corl in the finals. Corl owns a 4-2 victory over Underhill at the state duals.

Besch, looking to get back to states for the second consecutive season, controlled Central Mountain’s Zach Knepp the entire match for a 5-0 victory. Besch (23-9) faces top-seeded D.J. Hollingshead of Altoona for the D6 crown.

Knarr held a 7-0 lead on Philipsburg’s Kaleb Guy before locking up the cradle for the fall in 3:45. Knarr (22-13) meets old nemesis Chad Reese of Central Mountain in the finals. Reese owns two victories over Knarr this season.

“To get six in the finals went according to the seeds. They took care of business,” Martin said. “Hopefully we’ll walk away with several champs. That would be the icing on the cake.

“I talked about winning the team title but I also talked about how important it was to get wins, score bonus points and move on. Getting bonus points on top of winning is awesome.”

Kevin Bair (138), Drew Hannon (195), Kyle Kahley (220) and Caleb Rhodes (285) advanced to the Northwest Regionals with victories in the consolation semifinals.

Hannon, who came into the tournament with an 0-3 mark, replaced an injured Tre Carter at 195 and advanced to the regionals with a 3-1 victory over State College’s Joaquin Alvarez.

“It was a weight class that was wide open. Hannon was a wrestler when he was younger. He came out this year and improved on what he already knew,” said Martin. “He capitalized on his opportunity and to his credit, he’s moving on to regionals. Nothing could be better than that.”

The Huskies lead the team race with 176 points. Central Mountain is second with 162.5 points.
