| April 24, 2015 | 0 Comments

Mifflin County coach Kirby Martin is taking a team to the LHU Spring Duals this Saturday, April 25, at the Thomas Field House on the campus of Lock Haven University.

Representing the Huskies at the event are Christian Fisher, Keith Shearer, Kyle Smith, Noah Myers, Jonah Kile, Trent Hidlay, Hayden Hidlay, Noah Stewart, Scout Kyper, Chase Hicks, Trey Hartsock and Christian Smith.

The Spring Duals features 16 teams, grades 8-12, from five different states. Weight classes represented will be at 100, 108, 116, 124, 132, 140, 148, 156, 165, 177, 195, 220 and heavyweight.

“We go to have fun and stay sharp.  it is an opportunity to for the younger kids to wrestle with the veterans on the team and to see what we got for next year,” Martin said.

Teams are placed into four pools consisting of four teams per pool. Each team is guaranteed five matches. The top three teams will receive a plaque.

Matches are three 1:30 periods with college out-of-bounds rules used.

Martin is using this opportunity to compete for many reasons.

“There are many reasons we are going to Lock Haven – 1. Continue to improve in competitions. 2. To see the value of nonstop training especially out of season. 3. To open the eyes of the younger kids about the level of wrestling they will see in high school and 4. Build team unity and have fun while wrestling,” he said.

It is all part of the process of keeping the kids in shape and wrestling ready. The sport is year round now and Martin is pleased with the off-season so far.

The out of season training is going great!  We really have a core group of kids working hard and still competing,” he said.  “We have excellent leadership right now that is pushing others to improve and train.  I would like to see a few more kids on the mat and buy into out of season training.”
