Hidlay Brothers Fall Short in Powerade Finals; Stewart third, Hartsock Seventh

| December 30, 2015 | 0 Comments

Four Mifflin County wrestlers made it to the medal stand at the Powerade Tournament on Wednesday. Unfortunately, none stood at the top of the podium.

The Hidlay brothers both came up short in the finals – Hayden dropping a tough 2-1 tiebreaker decision to rival Mason Manville (Wyoming Seminary) and Trent falling by a 4-1 count to Jake Wentzel, the 152 pound-AA state champion last season from South Park.

Noah Stewart finished third and Trey Hartsock came in seventh for the Huskies.

At 152, Hidlay and Manville met for the fifth time (Hayden leads the series 3-2) and it was typical of how these two go at each other –  lots of underhooks, heavy hands on the head and plenty of pummeling.

After a scoreless first period, Manville chose bottom and escaped to make it 1-0. Hayden chose defense to start the third and escaped as regulation ended even at 1-1. Hidlay shot a low single in sudden death and was close to getting the match-winning takedown but time ran out on the Husky senior. In the first 30-second rideout, Manville escaped to take the 2-1 lead. Hayden couldn’t get out in the second rideout, dropping his first match of the season.

At 160, Wentzel got on the scoreboard first with an escape to take an early 1-0 lead to start the second period. Wentzel scored off a counter to a Hidlay headlock for the 3-0 advantage, while Trent escaped and the period ended with Wentzel leading 3-1. Trent chose down to start the third and Wentzel rode the Husky sophomore the entire  period for the victory.

In the battle for third place at 170, Stewart used an escape and takedown in the second frame to defeat Spencer Carey of New Jersey by a 3-1 count. At 195, Hartsock collected a reverse in the second and a deuce with 23 seconds left to defeat Alex Delp of Kiski Area, 4-2, for seventh place.

Mifflin County finished in eighth place in the team standings with 105.5 points. Wyoming Seminary captured the team title with 194 points.

The Gruesome Twosome, better known as Hayden and Trent Hidlay, along with Noah Stewart all went 3-0 on the day and advanced to the semifinals of the Powerade Tournament on Tuesday.

Hayden cruised to the semis with a 3:06 fall over Jordan Laero (Kiski Area), a 14-2 major over Damon Greenwald (Burrell) and a 5:43 pin over Derek Verkleeren (Belle Vernon). The Husky senior faces Tervell Timmons of Illinois in the semifinals on Wednesday.

In a repeat of King of the Mountian, Trent Hidlay is defying his seventh seed. The Husky sophomore defeated Tom Starr of Kiski Area by a 12-2 major decision and followed that up with a 5-1 victory over Ethan Stas (Greater Latrobe). In the quarters, Hidlay took care of second seed Jacob Plunkett of Virginia by fall in 4:46. The younger Hidlay takes on Jose Taylor of Texas in the semis.

Stewart started the day with a 1:48 fall of Travis Hays (New Jersey) and a 15-0 technical fall over Joel Leise of Reynolds. The Husky senior had a tougher time in the quarterfinals, pulling out a 3-2 win. A takedown with 31 seconds left in the second and an escape in the third was all Stewart would need. Next up is a clash with Nino Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park) in the semis.

At 195, Trey Hartsock dropped his quarterfinal match to a familiar rival – Francis Duggan. The North Allegheny sophomore scored a takedown with five seconds left in the match to break a 1-1 tie and drop Hartsock to the consolations. Hartsock is now 0-4 against Duggan. The Husky senior meets Jayden Demmy of Cedar Cliff in the consolations. A win and Hartsock is guaranteed to place.

Mifflin County went 15-21 on the day.
