Mifflin County Gains Revenge on State College

Mifflin County won eight bouts scoring bonus points in all eight to claim the 46-29 Mid-Penn Commonwealth victory over State College on Thursday, gaining a measure of revenge after falling to the Little Lions a year ago.

The Huskies (5-1, 2-1) picked up pins from Logan Wise (132), John Retherford (138), Brycen Hassinger (145), Trey Kibe (152), and Trent Hidlay (182). Derek Burk picked up a 14-5 major decision over Clayton Leidy at 120, while Andrew Weaver (106) and Christian Fisher (113) won by forfeit.

Next up for Mifflin County is the Powerade Tournament on December 29-30.

Mifflin County vs. State College Preview

Mifflin County wrestling coach Kirby Martin may not admit it publicly but when the 2017-18 schedule came out facing State College at home was circled on his calendar.

Last season, the Huskies held a 36-14 lead over the Little Lions only to watch it evaporate as State College won the last four bouts by fall for the 38-36 victory.

Here we are a year later and the Little Lions venture to the Husky gym for the rematch tonight in a Mid-Penn Commonwealth dual, beginning at 7 p.m.

Mifflin County (4-1, 1-1), coming off its first loss of the season dropping a tough 34-33 decision to Chambersburg on Tuesday, own victories over Strath Haven (68-12), Manheim Township (58-10), Mount Union (38-30), and Carlisle (39-35). Mifflin County finished sixth at the King of the Mountain tournament last weekend in Mill Hall.

Leaders for the Huskies include top-ranked Trent Hidlay (9-0 at 182/195), No. 2 Christian Fisher (9-1 at 113), No. 21 Logan Wise (8-3 at 132), Trey Kibe (10-2 at 152), Jacob Krepps (6-3 at 195), Kross Todaro (8-3 at 220), John Retherford (6-4 at 138), and Derek Burk (4-4 at 120).

State College (1-1, 0-0) defeated Jersey Shore (52-26) and lost to Shikellamy (42-34). The Little Lions also competed in the Jarvis Tournament.

Junior Cole Urbas, third in the state last season, leads the Little Lion attack. Urbas (2-0) is ranked No. 1 in the state at 195. Senior Ian Barr (2-0) is rated seventh at 170 pounds.  Other top wrestlers for State College are sophomore Clayton Leidy (4-1 at 113), freshmen Owen Woolcott (5-1 at 120), and Lance Urbas (4-3 at 160), and senior Jackson Heasley (2-0 at 285).

In what could be the match of the evening Hidlay could move up to face Urbas in a battle of top-ranked wrestlers and PIAA medalists.

Huskies Drop First Match in Heartbreaker to Chambersburg

Mifflin County, up 33-22 with two bouts left, gave up two falls at 160 and 170 to suffer a heartbreaking 34-33 loss to Chambersburg in a battle of Mid-Penn Commonwealth opponents on Tuesday.

The Huskies (4-1, 1-1) opened up a 15-0 lead thanks to falls by Trent Hidlay (182) and Kross Todaro (220), and a 5-1 decision by Jacob Krepps (195).

Chambersburg (3-1, 1-1) cut the deficit to 15-12 with back-to-back falls at 285 and 106 respectively. Mifflin County got back on track with falls from Christian Fisher (113) and Derek Burk (120) to make it 27-12 in favor of the Huskies.

It was all Trojans from here on out as the home team won five of the last seven matches, scoring bonus points in three of those. The lone victories for Mifflin County were impressive ones. Freshman Trey Kibe scored his biggest win of his young career with a 3-0 victory over state-ranked and fellow freshman, Tate Nichter at 152. At 132, Logan Wise came out on top in a battle of state-ranked wrestlers with a 7-2 victory over Seth Runshaw.

Mifflin County was without three starters – Joey Taptich (126), Anthony Fultz (170), and Bronson Smith-Price (285). The Huskies take on District 6 and Mid-Penn rival State College at home on Thursday.

Mifflin County won the junior high match 53-43 with the Huskies capturing 10-of-14 bouts. Lucas Sheets, Kyler Everly, Anson Wagner, Hunter Carson, and Tegan Tate recorded falls.

Hayden Hidlay Jumps to No. 3 in Flo Rankings

After impressive wins over Tyler Berger and Joey Lavallee, former Mifflin County and current North Carolina State standout Hayden Hidlay jumped from 11th to 3rd ay 157 pounds in the latest Flo Rankings.

Hidlay is behind Jason Nolf of Penn State and familiar opponent Michael Kemmerer of Iowa, who are 1-2 in the weight class. Lavallee was runner-up at 157 at last year’s NCAAs.

Hidlay is 12-0 on the season.

Husky Junior High Places Third at Milton; Three Win Titles

The Mifflin County Junior high team finished third at the Milton tournament over the weekend scoring 185 pts, placing nine wrestlers with three champs – Hunter Johnson (80), Kyler Everly (130), and Anson Wagner (138).

Everly won the Outstanding Wrestler award and the most and quickest pins. Central Dauphin placed first with 197 points. Hughsville was second with 187. There were 22 teams represented.
