Another Heartbreaking Loss for Mifflin County

It was almost a replay of the Central Mountain match last week. The result was the same…another gut-wrenching loss for Mifflin County.

The Huskies jumped out to a 16-9 lead against Mid-Penn Commonwealth foe Chambersburg only to watch it slip away. The Trojans came roaring back to take a 31-23 win, thanks to some missed opportunities by Mifflin County.

Chambersburg, now 12-3 on the season and 5-1 in the conference, captured four straight bouts from 152 to 182, scoring bonus points in three of those, to take a 28-16 lead it would never relinquish. The loss drops the Huskies to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the Mid-Penn.

Mifflin County started out with a big win from Daulton Wilson at 106. The sophomore, down 6-2 to Colin Runshaw in the third, locked in a half and pinned the Trojan freshman in 5:18. Wilson improved to 12-8 on the season while Runshaw dropped to 14-7.

At 113, Hayden Hidlay returned to the lineup and had a donnybrook with Tanner Shoap in the premier bout of the evening. Shoap, ranked second in the state, made a third period escape stand up in a 1-0 win over Hidlay, ranked fifth in the state. Hidlay (13-2) put on a solid effort after missing almost a month of action with a concussion. Shoap improved to 21-5 on the year.

Isaac Underhill made the score 9-3 with a 1-0 victory over Garrett Kyner (16-8) at 120. Underhill (20-5) continued his impressive wrestling with a second period escape and riding out Kyner in the third.

At 126, freshman Noah Stewart hooked up in another big matchup with sophomore David Rump, a regional qualifier a year ago. When the smoke cleared, Rump (17-5) came away with the 2-0 victory in another defensive battle. Stewart (17-5) had some quality chances to score points, but couldn’t finish.

Lucas Besch made it 12-6 with a 6-0 blanking of David Law at 132. Besch (13-7) had a takedown in the first and three nearfall points in the third to roll to the victory.

The wheels started to come of the Husky train at 138 when heavily favored Kevin Bair dropped a 9-2 decision to John Hughes, who came in with just a 2-5 record. Bair (7-6) never recovered from a five-point move Hughes connected with to start the match.

Brandon Wilson stopped the bleeding for a little while with a solid 13-5 major decision over James McKenzie at 145. Wilson (13-5) scored a late takedown in the third for the major, which made it 16-9.

At 152, defending state champion Garrett Hammond wasted no time in gaining a 1:40 second pin over Carter Saxton. Hammond, now 27-4 on the year, had an 8-1 lead at the time of the fall.

The big blows for Mifflin County came at 160 and 170. Both bouts were toss-ups and the Huskies came out on the short end.

Joe Knarr (14-9) held a 6-2 lead after two periods only to see it vanish when Calvin O’Farrell (12-8) escaped and hit a headlock for the pin in 5:14, giving Chambersburg its first lead of the night at 21-16.

At 170, McKenon Todaro dropped a 7-6 decision to Adam Tardosky (6-13) extending the Trojans advantage to 24-16. Down 7-4 in the third, Todaro (5-5) got a late takedown but it was too little too late for the Husky junior.

Chambersburg made it 28-16 when Dontez King (15-6) scored 11 points in the third for the 15-6 major decision over Wyatt Renninger, subbing for Jake Lilley at 182.

The Huskies got back on the winning track when Tre Carter (10-10) recorded a takedown with three seconds left for the 9-1 major over Devon Williams at 195. Kyle Kahley (14-6) followed with a workmanlike 3-1 decision over Colin Hansley at 220.

With score 28-23, it all came down to the heavyweights.

Unfortunately, Mifflin County dropped another toss-up bout when Caleb Rhodes fell to Cameron Kiger by a 7-2 score. All the points came in the final period.

The Huskies return to action on Saturday when they host the Husky Duals. Action gets underway at 9:30 am. The Mifflin County junior high squad improved to 17-1 with an 83-9 whitewashing of Chambersburg.
