The Real Importance of Thanksgiving

| November 28, 2013 | 0 Comments

Today is a day we gather for feasting and football, both good things in life I might add, but the day is also about something more profound.

Thanksgiving is all about gratitude, and as the name suggests, giving thanks for all we have in our lives.

Forty-seven, oh my God I’m getting old, Thanksgivings into this life, I have learned there is ONE thing that’s more important than ANYTHING else in our lives.

I didn’t always see things this way. When I was younger, I was very selfish and cared only about myself. Thank goodness, age and time have a way of softening a person’s rough edges.

Most of us already have what’s really important.

We have people around us who love and care about us.

We have health, freedom, and the ability to get up EVERY day of our life and share it with others.

All things considered, I’m sure ALL of us have had much more than we ever could deserve in this life. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing bad with wanting more. I want more.  It’s just not the be all end all in life.

It’s crazy when you think about how spoiled we are considering that over HALF the world wakes up everyday NOT knowing where their next meal will come from.

The people in your life are what truly matter.

It’s not what you possess…or how lean you are…or how much money you make; it’s who you love and who loves you that makes us tick.

Possessions come and go, but the one thing you can NEVER replace is the time you spend with your family and friends – or supporting others you love.

Instead of holding on to resentments or regrets, we must focus on all the good in our lives. Remember,  time is the ONLY thing we can NEVER get back. So why not make the most of it and focus on our loved ones and others we care for?

Because you never know when the Big Guy upstairs is going to call your number. Even if we sometimes feel immortal, we are not. We have a finite amount of time on the planet, so make the most of it.

Let’s not forget the lessons that Thanksgiving teaches. And let’s keep them in our hearts all year long. Even when things aren’t going so good.

My all of you have a truly Happy Thanksgiving!
