UWW Nationals: Hidlay Brothers Fall in Quarters, Could Meet in Consis

Hayden and Trent Hidlay made it to the quarterfinals of the UWW Junior Nationals in Las Vegas on Friday before falling into the consolations with tough losses.

If both win their sixth-round consolation match tomorrow, the brothers will meet and be guaranteed to earn a place finish at the U.S. Open.

Hayden, a redshirt freshman at NC State, opened up his tournament with a bye, and then 10-0 and 12-2 technical superiority victories over Jeremiah Moody (Iowa) and Dylan Lydy (Purdue) for a berth in the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Hidlay fell by an 8-5 decision to Evander Wick of Wisconsin. Hayden will meet the Andres Gandara-Justin Thomas winner.

Trent, just a junior in high school, took care of Cael McCormick (Army) 13-7, Gandara (Arizona State) 9-7, before majoring Brandon Dallavia (Stanford) by a 9-1 score. In the quarterfinals, Trent ran into a buzzsaw named Mark Hall, 2017 NCAA National Champion from Penn State, and lost by 10-0 technical superiority in 1:40. The younger Hidlay faces the Taleb Rahmani (Pitt) and Joseph Gunther (Iowa) winner tomorrow.
