Hayden Hidlay made sure his second trip to states would be a memorable one by earning a spot on the medal stand when he beat Hempfield Area’s Joey Alessandro on day two at the PIAA Class AAA wrestling championship on Friday.

Hidlay (37-3) defeated Alessandro 5-2 in the second round of consolations at 138 pounds, assuring him at least an eighth-place finish.

The Mifflin County sophomore had a takedown in the first, a reversal in the second and an escape in the third to seal the victory. Hidlay’s triumph marked the third time this season he’s beaten Alessandro (6-2 at King of the Mountain and 4-3 at Powerade).

Hidlay’s chance at a goal medal ended in the quarterfinals when Michael Kemerer collected three takedowns, en route to the 7-4 victory. Hidlay fell by a 7-2 score to Kemerer at the Powerade event back in December.

Hidlay faces Manheim Township’s Cortland Schuyler (36-4) in the third round of consolations, beginning at 9 am.

At 152, Noah Stewart saw his excellent sophomore season come to a close when he gave up a takedown with just three second left, falling by a 3-1 score to Jake Shaffer of Greater Latrobe in the second round of consolations.

Stewart (34-10) shot in on a single, but Shaffer countered for the winning points near the edge of the mat.

Class AAA action begins today at 9 am with semifinals and third-round consolations.
