Kirby Martin & The Team Championship Pose

D6 Champs: Hidlay, Hartsock and Craig

Hidlay OW Award

(Editor’s note: I had a video interview with Timmy Pearce filmed but for some reason the video came out blurry and of very poor quality. I will re-shoot one with Pearce and post it this week. Also, I will be posting a column about Dale Searer and Joe Eckenroth and the job they have done with the Husky upperweights this week as well as a NW Regional preview).

Head coach Kirby Martin and his Mifflin County wrestling team came into the District 6 Class AAA championships with two goals – repeat or outdo last season.

Mission accomplished.

Just a year ago, Mifflin County crowned three champions, sent 10 to regionals and won the team championship.

When the dust settled Saturday evening the Huskies walked out with four champions, eight finalists, nine headed to regionals, the outstanding wrestler of the event, and their second straight District 6 tournament team championship.

Hayden Hidlay (138), Trey Hartsock (182), Timmy Pearce (195) and Colton Craig (285) captured individual gold, while Isaac Underhill (132), Noah Stewart (152), Brandon Wilson (160) and Kyle Kahley (220) came up short in their bid for a district title and had to settle for second.

Freshman Noah Myers earned a trip to the Northwest Regionals with a fourth-place finish at 113 pounds.  Jonah Schultz (106), Kyle Smith (120), Daulton Wilson (126), Isaac Habbershon (145) and Keith Corson (170) all placed fifth but saw their seasons come to a close.

Hidlay (32-2) picked up his second title in as many years with a dominating performance that earned the Husky sophomore the Outstanding Wrestler Award.

A 17-second fall over Altoona’s Zach Reidell in the quarters, followed by a 1:10 pin over Nate Rosenberger of Bellefonte, earned Hidlay a berth in the finals. The outcome was never in doubt.

Hidlay scored 10 takedowns on his way to a 22-9 destruction of State College’s Mike Kauffman in the finals. Kauffman came in ranked No. 11 in the state.

Hartsock (27-10) captured his first district crown with a commanding 9-2 victory over top-seeded Dennis Lumadue of Philipsburg-Osceola. The Husky sophomore opened up a 6-1 advantage after one period and never looked back. Hartsock joins his father Troy, who was a district champion back in 1985.

Pearce (29-7) capped off of an impressive regular season with a hard-fought 3-1 overtime victory over David Gawryla of Bald Eagle Area in the finals. The Husky senior, who was a 138-pound backup a year ago, bulked up to 195 and has had an amazing season.

In the finals, the long, lanky Gawryla proved to be a tough challenge for Pearce, but a takedown 43 seconds into sudden death overtime, gave him the championship.

Craig (18-10) just keeps getting better and better as the season rolls along. A senior, this is Craig’s first season of varsity wrestling and at the start of the season, it looked like he’d be lucky to win five matches, but hard work and perseverance paid off.

Craig, the third seed, served notice he’s a legitimate threat at heavyweight with a 4-0 victory over Josh Fye of BEA in the semis. In the finals, Craig made a third-period escape hold up for the 1-0 victory over Central Mountain’s Bryce Hanley in the finals.

Like Hartsock, Craig joins his father Dirk, who was a two-time district champ for Chief Logan in 1983-84.

At 132, Underhill (20-9) dropped a 5-2 decision to Bellefonte’s Trevor Corl in the finals. The championship was Corl’s third in as many years. A takedown in each of the first two periods sealed the deal for the Red Raider junior.

At 152, Stewart (30-7) couldn’t overcome the power of Altoona’s D.J Hollingshead in a battle between two top-ten state ranked wrestlers. Hollingshead, ranked third in the state, scored a takedown in each period and fought off numerous shots by Stewart to gain the win.

Brandon Wilson (3-2) suffered the heart-break loss of the finals to Chad Reese of Central Mountain. Wilson took Reese down to his back for a five-point move in the first period and escaped in the second for a 6-0 lead with one period left.

Reese would score seven points in the third period on a visibly tired Wilson to force overtime. In sudden death, Reese scored with 23 seconds left for the 9-7 victory. Wilson still isn’t in 100 percent wrestling shape after missing the entire regular season with a knee injury.

At 220, Kahley (10-4) once again ran into an old nemesis – Cameron Porter of Central Mountain – in the finals.  A late takedown in the first by Porter gave the Wildcat a 2-0 advantage heading into the third. Porter escaped to make it 3-0 before Kahley scored on a single leg shot to cut the deficit to 3-2. An escape by Porter made it 4-2 and that’s the way it stood as Kahley couldn’t solve Porter’s defense down the stretch.

The Huskies won the team title with 216 points. Central Mountain took second with 202 points and Bellefonte was third with 155.5 points.

Next up for Mifflin County is the Northwest Regional Class AAA tournament in Altoona Friday and Saturday. The top three finishers in each weight class advance to the PIAA state championships in Hershey March 6-8.
