Zain Retherford of Benton won a hard-fought finals victory to give the Penn State recruit the 138-pound championship at the Walsh Ironman tournament on Saturday.

Retherford dominated the early rounds, posting three falls and two majors to reach the finals against Blair Academy freshman Mason Manville.

One of Retherford’s wins came in the quarterfinals against Franklin Regional’s Josh Maruca, the top-ranked Class AAA wrestler in the state, by a 13-2 major.

In the finals, Manville scored first for the 2-0 lead before Retherford closed out the period with an escape. Retherford chose down to start the second and escaped and scored a quick takedown to open up a 4-2 advantage.

Manville chose neutral in the third but the match ended on their feet and a 4-2 win for Retherford.

At 152, top-seeded Garrett Hammond of Chambersburg, another 2012-13 Nittany Lion recruit, was upset in the second round and had to battle back through the consolations for fifth place. Hammond went 6-2 on the day.

Canon-McMillan’s Cody Wiercioch (170) and Wyoming Seminary’s Eric Morris (182) also claimed titles for Pennsylvania. Blair Academy ran away with the team title with Wyoming Seminary, a PA prep school, taking second.
